Frequently Asked Questions

DOs are trained in many types of manual medicine, which include but are not limited to the HVLA (High Velocity Low Amplitude) technique predominantly used by chiropractors.  Many of the Osteopathic Manipulation Techniques used at The Osteopathic Way can be very gentle.  It is an appropriate, effective, and safe treatment for patients of all ages.

Very good question!  “Manipulation” is used to show the interaction an Osteopathic Physician has with the tissues of the body, not the person themselves.

The techniques used at The Osteopathic Way include Muscle Energy, Counterstrain, Osteopathy in the Cranial Field (Cranio-Sacral Therapy), HVLA (High Velocity Low Amplitude) , Fascial Distortion Model, Myofascial Release, Intraosseous release, Balanced Ligamentous Tension among other types

DOs are fully licensed physicians performing this type of treatment. As board certified physicians, imaging, history and other medical issues are all taken into account. DOs have 10,000-16,000 hours of training in becoming a doctor in addition to learning about the musculoskeletal system on a deep level. Hands on training for DOs lasts for years, whereas other body workers can often complete certification in as little as a few hundred hours. They can also prescribe medications, order labs and imaging and interpret those things. They can advise on other medical conditions if they feel it is within their scope of practice. They can and will refer to other doctors if needed to complete the care team for their patients. They are trained in understanding whether a condition is a surgical issues or not. Other bodyworkers have a surface level understanding of how physicians think and operate, whereas DOs ARE physicians and have often trained alongside other specialists while in school or residency.

Osteopathic Manipulative Therapy (OMT) is a type of bodywork done specifically by Osteopathic Physicians (DOs). DOs focus on a whole-person approach to treatment and care; tuning into how a patient’s lifestyle and environment can impact their physical, mental and spiritual well-being, while partnering with patients to help them get healthy and stay well. DOs are specially trained in the musculoskeletal system; your body’s interconnected system of nerve, fascia, muscles, tendons, ligaments, and bones.

DOs treat the physical aspect of the body using a system called osteopathic manipulation. Osteopathic manipulation varies widely depending on the physician treating, as DOs learn MANY different approaches to treating the body.

At The Osteopathic Way our treatments tend to be more gentle, but we are able to do more direct or intense treatments if needed. It may feel like gentle stretching or movement that continues to have effects on the body for up to 2-3 days following the treatment.
